This Gary Taubes video “Big Fat Lies” is great.

Lustig’s “Sugar: The Bitter Truth” differers minorly from Taubes’ lesser positions, but they both make extraordinarily persuasive arguments against abundant sugar. Right around the 44th minute in Lustig’s video, he destroys fructose. He only seems to advocate its use by elite athletes for rapid glycogen replenishment. But he does say that fruit is basically ok because of fiber, essential nutrients and micronutrients.

[Taubes tackles fiber (in Good Calories Bad Calories) but only according to science. His position is there is no evidence fiber does anything helpful or otherwise.]

The most fascinating thing about both of these arguments is, they’re measurably opposite our culture’s nutritional orthodoxy. Anyone can go to NPR, look up segments on nutrition, and find leading nutritionists from esteemed institutions saying the opposite. I recall an NPR segment not long ago where a formidable professor of nutrition at NYU was misusing the thermodynamics argument Lustig is careful to debunk.
